There are six common boards on the market: solid board, paint-free board, multi-layer board, density board, European pine board, and particle board. Come and see how much you know!

1. Solid wood board

There are many varieties, mainly including red oak, ash, rubber wood, walnut, elm, etc. The advantages are that it is more environmentally friendly and of good quality, but the disadvantage is just one word: expensive. It is often used to make cabinet bodies and cabinet doors. Cabinet doors are prone to cracking and deformation after being made for a long time. (Solid wood boards are not necessarily logs. Logs are a whole piece of wood. Solid wood boards are generally made of wooden strips or wood blocks.)

2. Paint-free board

Also called large core board or block board, it is made of wood blocks or wooden strips glued together. When viewed from the side, it is the cross section of the wood. Due to its own characteristics, it cannot be made into a cabinet door that is too long, as it is easily deformed. The advantage is that the surface is smooth, easy to process, and can be used for woodworking. The disadvantages are that it is easy to deform, has a soft texture, poor nail holding power, and the edge sealing is easy to collapse. It is often used as a cabinet body, but is not recommended for cabinet doors. (You can also make cabinet doors, but you can only make short cabinet doors)

3. Multilayer board

Also called plywood, as the name suggests, it is a board bonded with glue. It is made of multiple layers of boards. It is somewhat similar to a paint-free board, but uses more glue. It looks a bit like a wafer biscuit from the side. The advantages are good moisture resistance, high strength and good load-bearing capacity. The disadvantage is that it has high glue content and is easy to deform. It is often used as cabinet body, but not suitable for cabinet door. (It is often used as cabinets for cabinets, but the formaldehyde content is difficult to control, so try to choose a big brand)

4. Density board

Also called MDF, it is made of wood fibers or other plant fibers. The higher the density, the better the quality. The advantage is that it can be shaped and has good flatness. The disadvantages are low strength, poor moisture resistance, and easy to absorb water and swell. It is often used as cabinet doors, but is not suitable for cabinet bodies. (For doors with shapes, only density boards or logs can be used)

5. European pine board

The inside of OSB is very similar to particle board, but the base material inside is larger than particle board and looks flaky. The advantage is that the material is uniform and the nail holding power is good. The disadvantage is that good European pine boards are usually more expensive and are often used for cabinet bodies and cabinet doors. (Often used in modern style cabinet doors)

6. Particle board

Also called particle board, as the name suggests, it is made of wood particles bonded with glue. This kind of board is commonly used on the market and has relatively uniform properties. The advantages are that it is cheap, resistant to aging, and has uniform performance. The disadvantages are that it cannot be shaped and the edges of the board are prone to water absorption and deformation. They are often used to make cabinets and cabinet doors. (Particle board is not necessarily not environmentally friendly. Although it uses a lot of glue, its environmental protection level is also very high with good workmanship)
